Purpose of Brake Fluid

In the brake system, the ability to stop properly and safety comes with brake fluid and its availability. This fluid has the ability to withstand a substantial life span, but like other fluids flowing throughout your Toyota, brake fluid has the potential to wear and tear. It is a hydraulic fluid that circulates through the brake system and makes the brakes move and work when pressure is applied. Essentially, it moves the pressure the driver applies directly to the brake. Without brake fluid, the pressure applied by the driver would not be identified and the system would not stop the car as intended. It also captures loose dirt and debris that is filtered into the brake system and prevents this debris from damaging the system and preventing it from working.

When to Schedule Brake Fluid Exchange

While your Toyota does not have a mileage mandate on changing your brake fluid, it can be inspected by a certified technician during each oil change. In most cases, it lasts approximately 100k miles or four years, depending on which comes first. If your brake system has been having difficulties and you are finding it difficult to stop even though your brake pads are working, then it may be time to have a brake fluid exchange service. During this service, a certified technician will flush the old brake fluid from the brake system and replace it with fresh brake fluid that is not carrying debris or worn down from constant use.
